OCTOBER: FRASER'S FASCINATING FUNGI

One of Australia’s leading fungi experts, Dr Tony Young, returns to Kingfisher Bay Resort this month to continue his fascinating lecture series on Fraser's Island unique fungal flora.  This time around Dr Young is joined by the Queensland's Herbarium's Nigel Fechner.

Saturday 18th October,
7.30pm - 8.30pm
Meet in Reception, Centre Complex

A fungus from North America might be the world’s largest but according Dr Young, the fungal flora on Fraser are equally as impressive – with some 99% of the island’s plant life existing in a symbiotic relationship with fungi, in order to survive.  Fraser Island is unique and there is no doubt that the fungal flora has specifically adapted for the low nuturient levels of the sand substate.

Nigel Fechner and Dr Young will also give a presentation on collecting and preserving macrofungi for Kingfisher Bay Staff who will assist a team lead by American Researcher Dr Roy Halling early next year.

AUGUST: BY JUPITER!  FRASER NIGHT SKY PERFECT FOR STAR GAZING

The Milky Way and Jupiter will come under ‘close observation’ at Kingfisher Bay Resort during a galactic gazing session with Astronomer Noeleen Lowndes and her high-powered Meade LX50 8inch Schmidt-Cassegrain computer driven telescope.

Mrs Lowndes, who visited the region earlier this year as part of NASA’s (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Saturn Observation Campaign, will conduct a series of special night-time presentations on the largest of all the planets in the solar system, Jupiter, on Fraser Island in early August.

Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th August,
Evening Sessions from 7.30pm
Meet in Reception

“Jupiter is fascinating,” she said.  “It accounts for more than 70% of the mass of all the planets in the solar system, gives off more energy than it gets from the Sun, and has storms that are big enough to swallow up a few planet Earths and can last up to 340 years.”

Noeleen Lowndes

Like the three other giant gas planets, Jupiter has a set of rings, which not too many people know. According to Noeleen Juptiters' rings are less than 30km thick and hard to see, compared to the magnificent rings of Saturn.

"As an added bonus our Kingfisher Bay star gazers will also have a first quarter Moon and the heart of the Milky Way will be right above our heads, so there will be lots of celestial objects to observe and discuss."
